Mindful in December

Being mindful is all about staying in the present moment. It involves not worrying about the past or what may or may not happen in the future. It requires you to be focused on the here and now. When you are being mindful and actively engaged in the present moment you can prevent injuries from unpredictable situations, like a slip and fall on the ice.

This may seem easier said than done, especially during the holidays. See below for some tips on being mindful:

1. Try to use all of your senses to take in the environment. Look at the lights and decorations, smell the air, listen to the sounds, and taste all the flavors the holiday season has to offer.

2. Be still and take a minute. Focus on your breath to slow things down in your mind and body. Your breath has a natural rhythm and when you focus on a slow deep inhale and exhale your body can relax. Calming yoga poses like child’s pose can also help.

Child's pose can a relaxing position if you are feeling stressed out or overwhelmed.

3. Be grateful for the things you do have instead of stressing over what you don’t have. Enjoy the time you have to spend with friends and family. Appreciate the small things that help make this time of year special.
